“You just can’t take the effect and make it the cause.” Or so says musician Jack White. But when can you infer causes from associations? As a doctoral student in the UNC Department of Biostatistics, I research causal inference applied to ecology and infectious disease. In particular, I focus on research designs and statistical methods that handle interference — when exposure of one unit under study affects outcomes in other units.
